I'm surprised that it took somebody this long to do a movie like this, they've spoofed everything else under the sun. I'm sure we can expect to see the typical gags that come with a Wayans' Bros production, but it actually looks like this could be kinda funny. An interesting little sidebar is that I went to a basketball camp with Damon Wayans' son who is featured in the film. Anyway, the only thing they have left to make fun of is foreign flicks, so let's see how long that takes.

I think Blaqstarr is fantastic. This guy has a nice range that he works within. He can take you to the dirtiest basement party with his B-More club stuff, and then he can smooth you out like this. Rye Rye has a pretty nice cameo on here. It's a big change from the Shake Your Body joint they did a while back.

So Lily Allen has this very cute way of telling it like it is and it probably confuses people when they listen to her music. She could make a song about pulling a Lorena Bobbitt and you would think that it was just this nice little ditty about love until you sang the lyrics out loud and realized what she was singing. This track is not as subtle, the title kind of gives it away, but it still has that very cute tone to it. Look, she even makes cute angry faces when she's trying to kick you in the head.

2008 was a great year for music as far as I'm concerned. A lot of people want to equate poor sales to bad music, but the two have nothing to do with each other. Originally I was only going to do a list of 20, but I started to realize that there were too many great albums that I was leaving out and decided to compile a list of 50. I was looking at a lot of the best of lists that are out already, including Rollingstone's, and noticed that no matter what website it was there was one album that kept coming up. Lil Wayne's Tha Carter 3 was on just about every list that I looked at. From alternative sites to indie blogs, Lil Wayne's latest efforts was recognized as one of the best this year. Pretty Funny Day N Night

I saw this .gif over at Mad Decent and thought it was hilarious (the accapella cover of the song that is posted is also a bit amusing). I know there was a big up roar about the Day N Night video and Cudi was very upset, but this is something that he's gonna look back on and laugh at. Let's be honest, the video was horrible, and this .gif sums it all up in a few frames. Hopefully the next video we see from Cudi will be all he wants and more because it sucks to put so much into your art just to have it messed with. This is just the first of many incidences to come for the Kid, but he'll be okay...Yezzy's on his side.

Kanye West Is Happy w/ His Music

I LISTENED TO 'SAY YOU WILL' LAST NIGHT AT MY HOUSE AND WAS DAAAMN, THIS SONG IS SOOOO DOOOPE!!!

In the words of Ron Burgundy, "Drink it in. It always goes down smooth." I think that's how Kanye is feeling right about now. He has an album that has everybody talking and he loves it. I have to admit, even though he has put out solid albums consistently, the chatter was always about his ego and not about the music. Now it seems that everyone wants to talk about the music. Whether you like the album or not you know you cannot deny that it is one of the most interesting products released in pop music in the last few years. For some reason though, I still don't think Yeezy pushed it as far as he wanted to. Most of the songs still have somewhat hip hop production styles, and the addition of Jeezy and Weezy, although he might have wanted them to be on the album, still allow rap fans to somewhat identify. If Kanye wants to keep pushing the boundaries I would like to see him work with artists such as Radiohead, Feist, TV on the Radio, the Chromatics and Hercules and Love Affair. Let's take it to that next plane where we completely leave any trace of hip hop behind. I know it's in his brain somewhere. Let's just see if he'll do it. Lil Wayne at Sundance

In other Sundance news, here's the trailer for the Lil Wayne documentary The Carter that will be showing. When did Wayne go from the young dude that accidentally shot himself to this guy? It doesn't really matter because not only is this a good look for Wayne, it's a good look for music period. There was a time in music before a lot of us were born where rock documentaries were just as common as Woody Allen movies. We've strayed away from that for a while, and it's good to let fan's see the other side of an artist whether it be a movie inspired by the music or an informative documentary. I'm interested to see how this comes out. Will it have the same cult following as Fade to Black? We'll see.

Spike Lee Goes To Sundance w/ "Passing Strange"

More than 20 years after making his first splash with "She's Gotta Have It," Spike Lee is finally going to make it to Sundance. His belated debut -- in the 25th year of the Sundance Film Festival -- comes as director and co-producer of the film version of "Passing Strange," the stage musical by L.A. indy-rockers Stew (Mark Stewart) and Heidi Rodewald that took an unlikely passage from New York's nonprofit Public Theater to Broadway in February. It ran for 165 performances at the Belasco Theatre, with Stew nabbing a Tony Award for best book of a musical before it closed July 20.

Lee said he filmed the last three performances in front of audiences, then did one more day of shooting on the empty stage where he could re-run scenes and go for setup shots. "It's very true to what people saw in Berkeley and the Public and on Broadway," he said. "But I still made it a Spike Lee Joint at the same time."

So it sounds like Spike is going to do for Passing Strange what he did for The Original Kings of Comedy. I'm glad that he is doing this because I heard a lot of good things about this play when it was out and was always interested in seeing it.

Musiq Soulchild "Onmyradio" Review

Talk about a breath of fresh air. Musiq Soulchild is back in full form with his new offering Onmyradio due out this coming tuesday. It might have just been me, but it seemed like the previous album, Luvanmusiq, was greatly uninspired. He had just moved from Island Def Jam to Atlantic and it seemed like he left a lot of the soul behind him. Sure songs like B.U.D.D.Y. and Teach Me were relative hits, but besides those two tracks there might have been maybe three more worth listening to. But it seems Musiq has found both his soul and inspiration on this album.

I wasn't a big fan of the bass heavy first single Radio at first but it has grown on me. I am still upset that we haven't been blessed with a scratch interlude or Musiq rap on the last three albums, but hopefully he will bring that back the next go around. Musiq rarely has features on his album, the most being on Soulstar, but on this disc Mary J. Blige and Damien Marley both provide Musiq with two very strong performances. The latter of the two, ifyouleave, sounds like classic Musiq Soulchild circa '00-'02. Rather than steal the show, Mary accompanies Musiq very nicely on a track about a potential break up. Other stand out tracks include Dearjohn, Backagain and my favorite Until.

Musiq is one of the few artists out of the Philadelphia Soul movement that still consistently puts out albums, and even though he lives in Atlanta now he is still representing for the City of Brotherly Love. If you are a fan of Musiq that was discouraged after the last two albums have no fear. This album will be worth every penny you spend on it and is guaranteed to get multiple spins.

This really doesn't surprise me at all because this kind of thing happens a lot in music and why should Coldplay be any different? Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani is accusing Coldplay of stealing original parts of an instrumental he did in 2004 called If I Could Fly. From what we can hear in the video above, it looks like The Play can take a seat on the naughty couch with Beyonce, Timbaland and Vanilla Ice. At least Vanilla Late was smart enough to add the extra "Dun Dunda."

I've known about Little Dragon for some time now, but since there has been a surge of interest amongst the hip hop community I have decided to post their video for Test. A lot of people classify the group as electro but I consider them to be more nu jazz/soul/dub. Somehow the found the most soulful half Japanese half Swedish lead singer, that at times reminds me of Ms. Badu. They just wrapped up their first ever U.S. tour and if you're like me you probably missed it. This is one of my favorite songs off of the album and the video is good too. This ninja stays making hits. I don't want to get to far ahead of myself but I'm calling it out: The Dream is the new R. Kelly/Teddy Riley. I was digging the first few tracks that leaked not that long ago, mainly Let Me See That Booty and Right Side of Your Brain, but this is the one. I'm excited for the new album Love vs Money which should be dropping in February. I still don't think his voice fits his look, but what are you gonna do right?

Black Dynamite Trailer

When I saw the trailer for this I wasn't sure what it was, all I knew was that I wanted to see it. Black Dynamite is a new millennium blaxploitation movie that features Michael Jai White (of Spawn fame) and is basically typical to all of the films of this genre. The synopsis reads:

When “The Man” murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor, Black Dynamite is the one hero willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

The movie looks pretty authentic from the trailer, looks like something Tarantino would do. I just hope they don't make a mockery of the genre...if that's possible.

Kno (of CunninLynguists)- Maroon 5 "Goodnight Goodnight" (uncleared remix)

The good homie Tunji shot over this remix that Kno did of the Maroon 5 song Goodnight Goodnight. Apparently this was left off of the upcoming remix project that Maroon 5 has coming out due to sample clearance. I have to say that I already liked this song but dig it a lot more with Kno's production. It kinda has this eerie feel to it but isn't dark and ominous. Don't worry Kno, you don't need that project anyway. I mean, besides a royalty check, what could that project have given you that we can't on the interweb?

What's up everybody? I'm back and I'm on Blogger. Had to get away from Wordpress, it was too strict over there. Anyway...for the first post on the new blog I decided to dig in the DRG Films archives and share this interview we did with Ro Blvd a while ago. If you don't know who Ro is, he's the guy that brought you Love Supreme with U-N-I and most recently Hollywood Hiatus. He's a part of the DRG fam, and I should have a newer video that we shot of Ro in the stu very soon. Ro is currently finishing up the U-N-I album, and as of right now it is at Detox status. But from the tracks I've heard so far it is going to be well worth the wait.
